During The Beat’s visit at to the school, we found out that some of the school’s classes were extremely overcrowded; with more than a hundred students in one mobile classroom.
The school, which was officially opened in 2006, has encountered several problems, much like other schools in the Waterberg area.
There is a shortage of educators to teach the ever-growing number of learners that flock to the school. There are currently only 15 teachers for the whole school. The school also produced a low matriculation pass rate for 2010 and 2011. In 2010, their pass rate was 38% and it dropped to an all-time low of 26% in 2011.
According to the Head Principal, Mr Mojapholo Steven, the school added three educators to their staff quotient to bridge the gap. The three new teachers are Seleka Frans, who is now teaches Mathematics in Grade 10 and 12, Charlotte Marindi, who teaches Life Science and Natural Science in Grade 10 and 12 while Ethel Ramotebele teaches Economics, Mathematics and Science in Grade 8 and teaches English in Grade 8.
“We believe with these additional educators we have our work load will be less,” said Mojapholo. “We have also introduced morning- and evening classes and also weekends classes,” he added.
The three educators have joined the school this year in January. Mojapholo said that the biggest challenge is lack of classrooms. This leads to the severe overcrowding that the school now has to contend with.
