16 Days of Activism at Jubilee Mall
The stakeholders that attended the event were delegates from the Department of Health, the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Labour, Hammanskraal Community Safety, the Metro Police, Correctional Services and GCIS. The community of Hammanskraal came to attend the event and supported everything that was talked about. A community elder said that women should not wait for men to support them, but should rather empower themselves and take charge of their lives.
Ms Petunia Mokgotho, from Correctional Services, said that prisoners are no longer being called prisoners, but are now called clients. She appealed to the attendees not to discriminate against former inmates. She also said that the 16 Days of Activism should be turned into 365 days of activism, because abuse knows no time constraints. The event was sponsored by Blue Reborn, Romans Pizza, Spar and Pick’nPay. The organisers of the event thanked the sponsors and Jubilee Mall centre manager, Ms Maggie Phuthi.
