Spa Park’s wonder-boy Donnie Alberts is looking forward to playing a key role in the national beach soccer team, following excellent performances during a friendly match-up with Zanzibar.
The South African Football Association (Safa) said in a recent statement that Alberts had scored “an outstanding goal” during the friendly match played in the Bububu town of Zanzibar on Sunday, 25 February.
The Spa Park hero came in as a substitute to score the celebrated goal.
The Bela-Bela Sporting FC player told The BEAT in an interview on Tuesday, 27 February, that there was talk in the national controlling body’s circles about forthcoming selections for the national team.
The selections were to be conducted in preparation for the Confederation of Southern African Football Association (Cosafa), and also the Fifa Beach Soccer World Cup.
“It was only a friendly match (against Zanzibar). It felt great getting another call-up. I had a better game there and went on to score,” Alberts said.
In the statement, Safa said the so-called beach soccer Bafana Bafana beat Zanzibar 6-0, with Alberts scoring a stunner in the 25th minute.
Alberts was on his second call-up after being blooded into the national team in the year 2015, during Cosafa Cup qualifiers in Durban.
