Bela-Bela’s volleyball personality Michael Makhubela has fallen short of being declared South African Sports Administrator of the Year at a gala dinner at Emperor’s Palace in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng.

Limpopo’s sports administrator of the year, Makhubela, is the coach at Bela-Bela’s Kamplits Volleyball Club.

In recent weeks he won the Limpopo leg of the award, scooping R20 000 prizemoney.

The South African Sports Administrator of the Year Award was won by Sanelisiwe Khuzwayo, from KwaZulu-Natal.

On the short list was also Dylan Tommy, president of Lifesaving SA.

Limpopo wonder-girl Caster Semenya, was named Peoples’ Choice SA Sports Star of the Year, and also South African Sports Woman of the Year.

The main award for the South African Sports Star of the Year was scooped by Luvo Mnyonga.

Makhubela started as a player for the much-decorated Kamplits Volleyball Club in his youth from 1994 to 1995.

He later became the head coach at Kamplits Volleyball Club from 2005 to 2012, before rising to be president of Limpopo Volleyball.

He has since disclosed he would donate his R20 000 winnings to his players, who were preparing for regional African championships in Zimbabwe next month.
