Modimolle handball team, Maniacs, triumphed against all odds over more senior teams, Modimolle Legends and Mokopane Seven Stars.
The victory was acheived during a mini tournament held at Modimolle Sports Grounds, on Sunday, 6 August.
The event was co-hosted by the Limpopo Handball Association and the Monotong branch of the ANC.
The aim of the tournament, the federation has said, was to revive handball as a sport of choice for the local community.
Maniacs played Seven Stars in the first game, winning 25-8.
The Maniacs team went on to beat Modimolle Legends 16-13.
In the third game, Seven Stars beat Modimolle Legends 21-20.
Maniacs were crowned tournament winners, with Seven Stars coming in second place.
Prizes consisted of medals and trophies.
Maniacs’ captain, Samuel Baloyi, received the prize for his team, while Arnold Phosa did likewise for Seven Staras.
Jan “Midos” Baloyi of Maniacs was chosen best player of the tournament.
Local resident, Kabelo Ramalatsi, presided over the awards ceremony for the players.
On a negetaive note though, Seven Stars were found to have committed the most fouls during the tournament.
Modimolle Legends player, Joel “Gallop” Mosemane, was the only player to have been red-carded.
Meanwhile, Maniacs played in another handball tournament in Mpumalanga on Saturday, 5 August, and came out the runners-up.
