The countdown to the 2017 Marakele Marathon has begun and the good news for the organisers and all other role players in the marathon is, there is a new sponsor on board.
Powerade, a brand under Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) has been confirmed as this year’s main sponsor of the event.
SANParks Northern Region Spokesperson Divhani Maremba said the sponsorship is part of CCBSA’s ongoing commitment to supporting and bringing about social change within communities in which it operates. The marathon, which is in its seventh year and also a Comrades’ qualifier will take place on Saturday, 8 April in the Marakele National Park.
Channel Development Specialist for CCBSA Ernest Zungu said CCBSA is committed to creating strong communities by promoting active lifestyles. He added that they are proud to be associated with an event that shares these same values.
Marathon host and Marakele Park Manager Mphadeni Nthangeni said last year they had it hard as they had no main sponsor for this race which draws people to the park. He added that they were grateful that this year is different and they shall forever appreciate all their sponsors to make the 2017 race a success.
Nthangeni further added that although this started as an event for the people of Thabazimbi only, it has since grown to be one of the premier sporting events in the Limpopo Province, steadily gaining momentum with athletes coming from the Gauteng and North-West provinces. He added that they are also seeing household names take part in the race.
