Against the backdrop of a persisting drought, Modimolle residents found themselves flooded by rainwater following a cloud burst last Wednesday 11 April.

By Monday 16 April some of the residents and officialdom were still engaged in mop-up operations in the aftermath of the sudden rain.

Motorists were forced to negotiate their way around flooded streets, with some of the paved surface rooted out.

Many homes across the low-lying RDP settlements of wards 6, 8, 11 and 13 were flooded by the heavy showers, which lasted for about two hours.

Family members worked for the best part of Wednesday afternoon removing bucketsful of rainwater from their dwellings.

Some schoolchildren were completely cut off from their homes, with parents arriving in their numbers at local schools, with the objective to collect the youngsters and walk or drive them through alternative routes to reach home.

Scores of residents were seen lining up at Peter Nchabeleng Hall to register their plight with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), for relief such as food parcels.

Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden said SASSA would be able to hand out a total of 450 food parcels, against the backdrop of 1095 already registered by Monday 16 April.

She said the Limpopo Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs had been requested to make available disaster funding.

Van Staden added that the Community Work Programme was also asked to get involved in the mopping up of flooded households, and cleaning of streets and sidewalks.

Downtown Modimolle was also badly affected, with several trees falling over powerlines, and electricity supplies going off for the best part of the afternoon.

Other information suggests that parts of Mandela section and Freedom Park were also affected in terms of interruptions to their power supplies.
