Shofloor workers at Shoprite in Bela-Bela have returned to work, following a chaotic pre-Easter shopping season as a direct result of a strike action.
The strike took place over two days, from Wednesday 28 March to Thursday 29 March.
Workers converged on the store’s main parking, chanting slogans and demanding higher wages.
They also pressed home demands for the full-time employment of those temporary workers who had been working at stores countrywide, allegedly over a long period of time.
South Afriocan Catering and Commercial Workers Union (Saccawu) regional official, Jojo Steward, said the striking workers have expressed concern over a range of issues, among these transport for those who worked late shifts.
The Saccawu national office said in a statement that negotiations would continue.
The union accused the retail chain store of alleged certain “unilateral” changes to shopfloor working conditions.
