Part of a police canteen in Modimolle was damaged by fire allegedly sparked by a burning cigarette.

Three boys and a girl, aged between 11 and 13, were being questioned over the incident, and cannot be named in terms of the Child Protection Act.

The incident took place at midday on Saturday 29 July, after police received mobile calls from members of the public alerting them of smoke billowing from the canteen.

Sergeant Ciska Fourie attended to the scene, and requested assistance from the fire department.

The four kids were spotted and identified by an eyewitness who alerted the police.

The foursome appeared before the courts midweek.

Modimolle SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findley said under such circumstances, the kids would be referred to social workers to be taken through a diversion programme.

The kids have been placed under the custody of their parents.

Anyone with information which could assist in the investigations is advised to call Fourie on 082 927 7756.
