Galloping into the sunset

Controversial Bela-Bela municipal manager Morris Maluleka has mounted the proverbial horse into the sunset, and was said to be relocating to Brits in the North West.

The municipality head stepped down on Monday, 31 July, during the final ordinary council meeting. His term in office had officially come to an end.

In his closing remarks, a defiant Maluleka – who had attracted controversial allegations from many quarters - reiterated he would never apologise for stepping on anyone’s toes during his term, due to the fact that it was part of his job.

Several attempts to remove him came to naught, with Maluleka clinging to his portfolio as the town’s most powerful bureaucrat.

The man raised many eyebrows when he extended his gratitude to, among others, DA Councillor Kobus van der Merwe, with whom he said he had “an interesting relationship.”

“I would like to express my gratitude towards the ANC councillors, but especially Kobus van der Merwe from the DA, with whom I had an interesting relationship. I think all would agree that it is time for me to go, but I will state this – I have never been happy with the way the municipality was being run, and that council should do more.”

He continued: “Good luck to all. I assure you, I will not be back.”

Chief financial officer Khatu Maposa’s term had also come to an end. He is currently working in the Rustenburg area, where the proverbial sun sets.
