Drivers had to exercise patience as traffic congestion on the N1 worsened when one lane of the road had to be closed for a time following a fatal accident.
Modimolle police’ spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay said that the accident happened on the afternoon of Saturday, 3 June between Middelfontein and Modimolle.
According to the information received, the accident involves two sedan vehicles that were coming from opposite directions — a Ford Fiesta with four occupants traveling south, and a Lexus with two occupants was travelling north.
The police said the driver of the Ford lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle left the road and ended up in the wrong lane, where the Lexus collided with it.
Findlay confirmed to the media that all four occupants from the Ford passed away while the two from the Lexus were seriously injured. He also indicated that the seriously injured victims had to be rushed to the local FH Odendaal Hospital for medical attention.
Findlay further said although they sustained serious injuries, the surviving passengers show signs of recuperation
At the time of going to press, Findlay said the deceased had not yet been identified. He added that the police are investigating a case of culpable homicide as a result of the accident.
