The police in Bela-Bela are investigating a case of dealing and possession of drugs following an incident on Friday, 7 July. Police station commissioner Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla said the suspect is a minor staying near the town and was arrested after a trap was set for him.
“After learning of the suspect’s dealings, we sent out an undercover officer to buy from him in order to catch him in the act. He was caught in possession of packets of drugs in his pockets and some were found at his home, where he stays with his brother and sister-in-law. We know he does not work alone and know who he sells for, and we are working on apprehending them very soon,” said Phetla.
He further confirmed that the suspect’s family members were interviewed following his arrest, and they told the police that they did not know about any of his dealings, saying they were even surprised to learn about his arrest.
The suspect has been returned to the custody of his family.
His name cannot be published in terms of the Chid Protection Act.
Phetla said the kid would be taken to Busasa place of safety in Polokwane, for assessment by social workers, who were expected to report back to the court on Thursday, 3 August.
