Three lions were found decapitated at Kareefontein, a farm outside Modimolle on Monday, 3 July. The police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
A case of stock theft was being investigated, following the senseless killing of these endangered animals.
Police said farm security personnel was on routine patrol, when the guards made the gruesome discovery in the lions’ enclosure.
The animals had apparently been poisoned, and their heads and paws chopped off. The police were summoned immediately and arrived swiftly to investigate.
A knife was found at the scene.
Early in June two lions were killed at the Emoya wildcat sanctuary in Vaalwater, with their mutilated carcases discovered by patrolling guards.
